CENTRE FOR IMAGING

The Centre for Imaging of Cebu Doctors’ University Hospital is a highly specialized, full service department which strives to meet all patient and clinician needs in diagnostic imaging and image–guided therapies. The Centre provides clinical services in diagnostic radiology, interventional radiology, ultrasound, cross sectional (CT–Scan and Magnetic Resonance Imaging), and bone mineral densitometry.

Services

Diagnostic Radiology

CDUH Centre for Imaging has gone digital with a variety of complementary technologies, all designed to improve patient care and enhance clinical data available to the physician. New technologies include Digital Radiography (DR), Computed Radiology (CR), and Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS). PACS to improve patient care by allowing radiologist and other clinicians to interpret and review images whenever and wherever they are needed, rather than in a specific reading or viewing room

Computed Tomography Scan (CT–Scan)

Computed Tomography (CT) uses X–rays to create numerous cross–sectional images of the body. CT is used to diagnose disease and injury in many parts of the body such as trauma, oncology, gastrointestinal care, postoperative evaluation, chest disorders, orthopedics, and angiographies . CDUH’s advance CT imaging systems (GE Light Speed VCT 64–Slice and Siemens Definition AS+ 128–Slice), with precise and rapid imaging of the body, provide highly detailed three–dimensional images which can be used to diagnose common and hard–to–detect conditions in areas such as the head (stroke assessment), neck, chest, heart and blood vessels, abdomen, lungs, colon, and legs.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) uses radiofrequency waves and a strong magnetic field to generate images of the body. MRI is valuable in providing clear images of soft–tissue structures of the body, such as heart, lungs, liver, and other organs. It is used to diagnose a broad range of disease including cancer, heart and vascular disease, stroke, and joint and musculoskeletal disorders.

Mammography

CDUH offers a full range of diagnostic services for breast cancer prevention and treatment. Mammography is a specific type of imaging that is safe and uses high quality, low dose x–ray system to examine breasts. It is the gold standard in detecting early breast cancer. Screening mammography guidelines recommend base line mammography at age 35 and annual screening mammography at age 40. Sono–mammography (Ultrasound of the breast) is the second most important imaging modality used to aid in the detection and diagnosis of breast diseases. Interventional procedures done in the Center include percutaneuos core–biopsy, needle–wire localization under mammographic and sonographic guidance, fine–needle aspiration biopsy, and galactography.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound is used to assess soft tissue structures such as muscles, blood vessels and organs. Nearly every organ in the body can be examined by ultrasound. Ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves to create real–time images within the body. Ultrasound images show the structure and movement of the body’s internal organs as well as blood flow. There are different ultrasound techniques for different conditions, which include obstetrics, gynecologic disorder, abdomen, transplants, guidance for procedures, musculo–skeletal, and Doppler and endoscopic ultrasound.

Interventional Radiology

Interventional radiology is a specialty in Radiology that offers an alternative to surgery to diagnose and treat a wide range of disorders of patients using minimal invasive technologies and techniques–catheters, guide wires, needles, balloons, stents, and other devices with radiological imaging. These procedures include diagnostic angiograms, coil embolization and stenting, balloon angioplasty and stenting, image guided biopsies, filter insertion, preoperative embolization, aspiration and drainage tube placement, thrombolysis for acutely clotted vasculature, interventional oncological procedures including chemoembolization, embolotherapy for bleeding disorders and vascular malformation, and uterine fibroid embolization. Patients undergoing procedures are worked up by the interventional radiology service with post–procedure clinical follow–up.

Bone Mineral Densitometry

A test to assess the strength of the bones and the probability of fracture in people at risk for osteoporosis. Bone density scanning is also effective in tracking the effectiveness of treatment for osteoporosis and other conditions that cause bone loss. The test, called “dual–energy X–ray absorptiometry” (DEXA), is an enchanced form of X–ray. DEXA scanning, the most accurate test for bone density, measure bone mineral density and compares it to normal levels.
