Radiation Oncology (sometimes called radiation therapy or radiotherapy) is the medical use of radiation in the
treatment of various diseases, primarily cancer. The radiation is produced by different kinds of equipment,
but all of them are used to destroy abnormal cells while preserving the normal surrounding tissues.
In many cases, radiation therapy is the single best method for the treatment of diseases such as cancer,
but it also maybe combined with surgery and / or chemotherapy.
At Cebu Doctors’ University Hospital – Radiation Therapy Center (CDUH–RTC) the treatments are given by a machine
called a Varian Clinac 600C Medical Linear Accelerator with 80 leaf–Multileaf Collimator which produces 6MV
x–rays. The machine is located in a specially shielded room to protect both patients and staff during the
treatment program. Providing radiation therapy is a team effort composed of radiation oncologist, assisted by a
medical physicist, radiation therapy technologist, and a radiation oncology nurse. Each team member is trained,
certified, or licensed as a specialist.
To deliver quality professional service with personalized care towards the integral health need of cancer patients, his body and soul, while preserving his/her dignity as a human being.
A radiation therapy center is responsive to the need to cancer patients under the care of compassionate, and highly skilled health care professionals.
The tumor volume and organs at risk are identified and their depths determined using 2D or two dimensional simulation and treatment planning with aid of simulator radiographs.
This requires Computed Tomography simulation and treatment planning to allow more accurate definition of tumor volume and anatomy of critical normal structures, and optimization of the radiation dose distribution.
This is a new approach to 3–D treatment planning and conformal radiation therapy by a dynamic delivery of radiation resulting to the modulation, the intensity of radiation delivered to the tumor volume while sparing the normal neighborhood.
Cebu Doctors’ University Hospital – Radiation Therapy Center is open from Monday–Friday and accepts clients from 7:00 AM–5:00 PM. During Holidays, the center is open only from 7:00 AM–12:00 NN. The patients have the prerogative to choose to schedule of their treatment session within the said office hours.
